How to Integrate Apps with Slack

Connect your favorite tools to Slack. Step-by-step guide to integrating Google Drive, Jira, GitHub, Zoom, and more.

How to Integrate Apps with Slack

1

Browse the Slack App Directory

Go to slack.com/apps or click 'Apps' in the Slack sidebar, then 'App Directory'. Search for the tool you want to connect. Each app listing shows features, permissions required, and reviews.

2

Install the app

Click 'Add to Slack' on the app page. Review the permissions the app requests (which channels it can read, what data it accesses). Click 'Allow' to complete installation. Some apps require workspace admin approval.

3

Configure the integration

Most apps need configuration after install. Typically: authenticate with the third-party service, select which channels receive notifications, and choose which events trigger messages. Follow the app's setup wizard.

4

Subscribe channels to events

For tools like GitHub or Jira, use slash commands to subscribe specific channels to specific repos or projects. Example: /github subscribe owner/repo in the #engineering channel.

5

Test the integration

Trigger a test event (create a test issue, push a test commit) and verify the notification appears in the correct Slack channel. Adjust notification settings to reduce noise if needed.

Pro tips

  • *

Start with 3-5 essential integrations — too many at once creates notification overload

  • *

Use the /apps command in any channel to quickly search for and install apps

  • *

Review app permissions annually — remove apps your team no longer uses

  • *

The free plan limits you to 10 app integrations — prioritize the ones your team uses daily
