How to Use FigJam for Workshops and Brainstorming

Run effective workshops and brainstorms with FigJam. Use sticky notes, templates, voting, and timers to facilitate productive team sessions.

How to Use FigJam for Workshops and Brainstorming

1

Create a FigJam file

From the Figma home screen, click '+ New FigJam file'. Browse the template gallery for a starting point — sprint retrospective, brainstorming, user journey map, team standup, or start with a blank canvas.

2

Set up your board

Add sections to organize the board (e.g., 'Ideas', 'Pros/Cons', 'Action Items'). Use text headings and divider lines to create clear zones. Pre-populate prompts or questions as text labels so participants know where to contribute.

3

Facilitate the session

Share the FigJam link with participants. Use the built-in timer (click the clock icon) to timeblock activities. Participants add sticky notes (S), use stamps to vote (E for emoji, V for vote), and draw connections between ideas with the connector tool (L).

4

Synthesize and document outcomes

After the session, group related sticky notes into themes. Add summary text boxes capturing key decisions, insights, and action items. Use the Figma-to-FigJam embed to link relevant designs. Export the board as an image or share the link for async reference.

Pro tips

  • *

Send participants the FigJam link 5 minutes before the session so they can familiarize themselves with the board layout

  • *

Use the 'Lock' feature on elements you don't want participants to accidentally move (like section headers and prompts)

  • *

Enable anonymous sticky notes for sensitive topics (like retrospectives) to encourage honest feedback

  • *

After the workshop, convert action items into tickets in your project management tool and link back to the FigJam board
